The ground-breaking ceremony for the Albano campus was attended by Helene Hellmark Knutsson, Minister for Higher Education and Research, Karin Wanngård, Commissioner of Finance for the City of Stockholm, Astrid Söderbergh Widding and Peter Gudmundson, the Vice-Chancellors of SU and KTH, Kerstin Lindberg Göransson, President of Akademiska Hus, Pelle Björklund, CEO of Svenska Bostäder, and Isabella Hagnell, Vice President of the Student Union (SUS), and Pontus Gard, President (THS).
“In order to be a leading nation for research and knowledge, Sweden needs attractive campus environments where people and ideas meet. Albano will be an important meeting place for researchers and students from all over Sweden and help to strengthen our international appeal,” says Helene Hellmark Knutsson, Minister for Higher Education and Research.
“Breaking ground here is extremely important for the future. The construction project is good for Stockholm as a knowledge region, while reducing the housing shortage which we know inhibits growth,” says Karin Wanngård, Commissioner of Finance for the City of Stockholm.
As Stockholm University and KTH grow, new premises are needed for both the short and long term, where universities can act and interact – with each other and with the community. A total of approximately 100,000 sqm of university facilities will be built on the campus.
“Albano will be a modern place university environment, a place for research and higher education with excellent conditions for the meetings and collaborations across disciplines and institutional boundaries that are part of a modern education and research environment,” says Astrid Söderbergh Widding, Vice-Chancellor of Stockholm University.
“For KTH this welcome development ties our campuses closer together, which will hopefully provide synergies in research and education, as well as in student housing,” says Peter Gudmundson, Vice-Chancellor at KTH.
In addition to becoming an attractive learning environment with educational and research facilities, Albano will also offer 1,000 undergraduate and graduate student housing units that will be built on the campus for students and researchers, as well as premises for commercial services such as restaurants and cafes.
A variety of activities will help to create a vibrant urban environment, twenty-four hours a day.
“Building 1,000 climate-smart flats for students and researchers on the Albano campus is completely in line with our objective of creating more homes for young people. In addition, we view creating a campus that is lively and bustling around the clock at these universities as extremely positive,” says Pelle Björklund, CEO, Svenska Bostäder.
